Custom Mouth Guards & Bite Guards
Whether you need maximum protection during contact sports or relief from nighttime teeth grinding and clenching, our dental-grade, lab-fabricated guards are custom-designed for a perfect, comfortable fit.
Why Choose a Custom Fit?
Standard shop-bought "boil-and-bite" guards are bulky, loose-fitting, and can restrict breathing or speech. Worse, they offer significantly less protection because they fail to distribute forces evenly across your teeth.
A custom mouthguard or bite guard fabricated by our partnered professional laboratory conforms perfectly to the exact contour of your teeth and gums, offering superior protection, durability, and comfort.
Gag-Free Digital Scanning Available
At Kingshurst Dental Surgery, we now offer advanced digital scanning. This means no messy impression trays or goop, resulting in a fast, comfortable, and completely gag-free experience.
-
Teeth Grinding (Bruxism)
Unconscious grinding or clenching (especially during sleep) leads to wear, cracks, chips, and tooth sensitivity. Our bite guards protect your natural teeth and restorations.
-
Sports Protection
Crucial for contact sports (rugby, hockey, boxing, martial arts) to prevent painful lip and cheek lacerations, broken teeth, jaw dislocations, or concussions.
-
TMJ & Jaw Pain Relief
Clenching puts excessive pressure on your temporomandibular joint (TMJ), causing headaches, neck stiffness, and clicking jaw joints. Custom guards relieve this stress.
-
Snoring & Sleep Apnea
Specialised Mandibular Advancement Splints (MAS) posture the jaw forward to open up the airway and resolve heavy snoring and mild sleep apnea.
Sleepwell MAS Device
Designed to treat snoring and mild to moderate Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). Postures the lower jaw forward to keep your airway clear and open while sleeping, while also preventing grinding.
Botox in the Jaw
A small, targeted injection administered by our medically trained specialist. By relaxing the masseter (jaw) muscles, it reduces clenching force and pressure without the need for a physical guard. Lasts 6–9 months.
How It Works
Getting your custom-fit mouthguard takes just two simple appointments at our modern Birmingham practice.
Consultation & Scan
Book in to see your dentist. We will examine your teeth and take high-precision digital 3D scans (or traditional moulds) of your upper and lower jaws.
Bespoke Lab Fabrication
We send your digital scans directly to our partnered dental laboratory, where technicians custom-craft your guard using premium, durable materials in just 2 weeks.
Fitting & Collection
You return to the practice. Your dentist checks the fit, makes minor adjustments if needed to ensure absolute comfort, and provides your storage case.
Bite Guard Aftercare & Maintenance
Wearing & Cleaning
-
When to Wear: Wear your bite guard at night while sleeping (unless advised otherwise by your dentist). If you suffer from daytime clenching or grinding, you may also wear it then.
-
Immediate Rinse: Rinse your bite guard thoroughly with cold water both before placing it in your mouth and immediately after each use.
-
Gentle Brushing: Brush the guard gently with a soft toothbrush. Use plain water or a non-abrasive soap. Do not use toothpaste, as its tiny abrasive particles can scratch and dull the guard.
Storage & Safety
-
Use the Case: Always store your bite guard in its protective case when not in use. Allow the guard to air dry completely before closing the case to prevent bacteria growth.
-
Avoid Heat: Store it in a cool, dry place. Avoid hot water, direct sunlight, or leaving it near heat sources (like radiators), as excess heat can warp and ruin the custom fit.
-
Bring to Check-ups: Bring your guard with you to every routine dental examination. This allows your dentist to check the fit, evaluate wear, and ensure it remains effective.
