What are Clear Aligners?

Clear aligners are custom-made, virtually invisible, and removable plastic trays that straighten your teeth over a treatment period. They apply gentle, controlled pressure to specific teeth, slowly moving them into their ideal positions.

Unlike traditional metal braces, clear aligners are smooth, comfortable, and completely metal-free. They fit seamlessly into your personal and professional life.

State-of-the-Art In-House 3D Printing

At Kingshurst Dental Surgery, we utilize state-of-the-art 3D printers to manufacture high-resolution clear aligners. This advanced precision allows our aligners to fit better, stay clearer, and require fewer composite attachments on your teeth. It speeds up your treatment time and reduces the risk of relapse.

Advantages of Aligners

  • Nearly Invisible

Made of clear medical-grade polymer, they are practically imperceptible when worn, letting you smile confidently.

  • Fully Removable

Take them out to eat meals and snacks, and brush and floss normally. No food restrictions like metal braces.

  • Exceptional Comfort

No sharp metal brackets or poking wires to cause cuts or ulcerations inside your cheeks.

  • Fewer Practice Visits

You manage your aligner changes at home, meaning you require fewer routine adjustment appointments with your dentist.

Disadvantages of Aligners

  • Requires Consistency

Aligners must be worn diligently for 22+ hours per day. Failure to do so will delay your results or cause treatment relapse.

  • Risk of Loss

Because they are removable, they can be easily lost if wrapped in tissues or left outside their protective case.

  • Not for Complex Cases

Highly severe malocclusions, skeletal bite issues, or complex tooth rotations may require traditional orthodontic braces.

Patient Compliance

Clear Aligner Aftercare & Care Guide

Wearing & Cleaning Rules

  • 22+ Hours Daily Wear: You must wear your aligners for at least 22 hours per day. Only remove them to eat, drink (anything other than cool water), brush, and floss.
  • Switch Every 2 Weeks: Switch to your next aligner set exactly every 2 weeks. Always change aligners at night before bed. This gives your teeth 8 uninterrupted hours to adjust to the new pressure.
  • Gentle Cleaning: Rinse aligners with cool water every time you remove them. Brush them gently with a soft toothbrush (no toothpaste, as it can scratch the plastic and make it look cloudy). Use non-abrasive soap occasionally.

Eating, Drinking & Safety

  • Eat & Drink Safely: Remove aligners before all meals and snacks. Drink only plain, cool water with your aligners in. Hot drinks can warp the plastic, and sugary or coloured drinks can pool inside, causing decay or staining.
  • Use the Protective Case: Always store your aligners in their case when not in use. Never wrap them in tissue — they are easily mistaken for rubbish and thrown away! Keep your previous set as a backup.
  • Tightness is Normal: Tightness and pressure are normal for the first 1-2 days of a new set — this shows they are working. If aligners crack, break, or don't fit, contact KDS immediately.
Common Questions

Clear Aligner FAQs

Do clear aligners hurt?
You will feel tightness, pressure, or mild discomfort when you first start wearing aligners or switch to a new set. This is completely normal and is a positive sign that the trays are applying the necessary pressure to move your teeth. It usually subsides within 24 to 48 hours.
What does the Treatment Plan Report include?
The Treatment Plan Report contains a digital link to a personalized 3D ArchForm dashboard. This dashboard shows an animation of your teeth moving stage-by-stage from their current positions to the final result. It also details the number of aligners needed and whether any composite attachments or spacing adjustments (IPR) are required.
How do I whiten my teeth alongside aligners?
Because clear aligners act as custom trays that fit perfectly to your teeth, you can add our professional teeth whitening gel for a special discounted bundle rate. You simply apply a small drop of the whitening gel inside the aligners during your treatment, whitening your teeth as they straighten.
What is the 'bounce' in a new aligner?
You may notice a slight 'bounce' (a small gap or springiness between the aligner and your teeth) when you first insert a new set. This is normal and occurs because the aligner is shaped for where your teeth need to move, rather than where they currently are. Within 1 to 2 days, your teeth will adjust, and the aligner will fully engage.
What happens if I lose or break an aligner?
If an aligner is lost or damaged, do not leave your teeth without an appliance. Immediately wear your previous set of aligners as a backup to prevent your teeth from relapsing. Then, contact Kingshurst Dental Surgery right away so we can print and supply your replacement aligners.
Do I need to wear a retainer after aligner treatment?
Yes. Once your teeth are straight, you must wear a retainer (usually a clear tray worn only at night) to prevent your teeth from drifting back to their original positions. Teeth have a natural "memory" and will relapse if not retained. Our Intermediate and Complex packages include final retainers to protect your new smile.
